Kilimanjaro Mountain Climb: Shira Route

The Shira route approaches Kilimanjaro through forest and moorland from the West, crossing the caldera of Shira volcano and exploring the rock formations of the plateau, before traversing beneath the Southern ice-fields of Kibo. We make our final ascent by the Barafu route. The six day itinerary ensure good acclimatization and there are often stunning views of Kibo in the sharp light of morning and early evening. Shira is a little – used approach route and there is time to enjoy the unspoilt wilderness of Shira Plateau before converging with other routes later on.

Day 1: The walk starts at Base Camp and climbs steadily on a broad track to reach the rim of Shira Plateau, The views across the surrounding plains open out as we climb. Overnight  stay at Shira One camp 3450m.(2hrs)

Day 2: A morning of a gentle ascent and panoramic views, hiking on lava ridges to reach Shira Hut -3840m (4hrs)

Day 3: An easy day to help acclimatization and to explore the grassy moorland and the volcanic rock formations of the plateau and of course to reach Lava Tower- . Overnight stay at Lava Tower -4600m. (4hrs)

Day 4: A short and easy morning of gentle descend to reach Barranco Camp 3,950m. Overnight at Barranco Hut (3hrs)

Day 5: A speed climb up the Barranco Wall is followed by an undulating trail on the South-Eastern flank of Kibo, with superb view of the Southern ice-fields. Overnight stay at Karanga Camp- 4100m (4hrs)

Day 6: A short but steep climb out of Karanga Valley Camp, following an easy path on compacted scree with wide views that gained altitude provide to unrelentingly reach Barafu Camp site- 4600m (3hrs)

Day 7: We will start our final ascent to the summit by midnight slowly but steadily pace to Uhuru peak 5,895m . Descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast. After some refreshments at Barafu, we continue to descend to reach our final campsite Mweka Hut -3,100m. (11-15 hours walking)

Day 8: A sustained descent through lovely forest lush undergrowth takes us to the National Park gate at Mweka (1,750m), where our car will be ready to transport us back to the lodge
