Kilimanjaro Mountain Climb: Lemosho Route

The Shira route approaches Kilimanjaro through forest and moorland from the West, crossing the caldera of Shira volcano and exploring the rock formations of the plateau, before traversing beneath the Southern icefields of Kibo. We make our final ascent by the Barafu route.

Day 1: A short day of walking that begins from Lemosho National Park gate (1980m.) through the forest, and continue climbing steadily on a broad track through the mountain rain forest to get to Mti Mkubwa camp site . Overnight at Mti Mkubwa 2600m (3hrs)

Day 2: A long day to help acclimatization and to explore the grassy moorland and the volcanic rock formations of the plateau. We walk to a huge buttress of rock surrounded by steep spires and pinnacles. There is a tangible sense of wilderness here (especially when the afternoon mists come in) and the views of Mt. Meru floating on the clouds are simply unforgettable. Overnight at Shira One camp 3450m (6 hours walking)

Day 3: An easy day to help acclimatization and to explore the grassy moorland and the volcanic rock formations of the plateau. Slow ascent to reach Lava Tower 4600m.  Overnight at Lava Tower 4600m.(4hrs)

Day 4: A short and easy morning of gentle descend to reach Barranco camp 3,950m. Overnight at Barranco.(3hrs)

Day 5: A speed climb up the Barranco Wall is followed by an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, with superb view of the Southern icefields. Overnight at Karanga camp 4100m (4hrs)

Day 6: A short but steep climb out of Karanga Valley camp, following an easy path on compacted scree with wide views that gained altitude provide to unrelentingly reach Barafu camp site 4600m (3hrs)
